Exploring Tri Hita Kara: The Balinese Philosophy of Harmony and Balance

SOULSHINE WAS CREATED ON THE FOUNDATION OF OF THE BALINESE PHILOSOPHY OF TRI HITA KARANA

In the lush and vibrant island of Bali, a unique and ancient philosophy called Tri Hita Karana guides the way of life for its people. This beautiful concept, which translates to “three causes of well-being,” emphasizes the importance of maintaining harmony and balance in relationships with humans, nature, and the spiritual world. This is the foundation of which Soulshine has been built on and continues to be inspired by.

Balinese people strive to maintain a harmonious relationship with these three realms, recognizing that each one is interconnected and essential for a balanced and peaceful existence. Together, these three elements create a holistic approach to life, advocating for balance in spiritual, environmental, and social dimensions.

THE THREE CAUSES OF WELLBEING AND HAPPINESS

How Soulshine practices Tri Hita Katana:

Human to Human: Fosters a sense of community among our guests and staff are important. Our relationship with our community is equally important. We encourage connection through cultural experiences that promote respect, understanding, and collaboration among community. The human connection at Soulshine:

  • Our team might be one of the most kind and outgoing teams on the island ready to make your stay memorable but also connect with you on the culture and beauty of Bali
  • We created intentional spaces like the Togetherness Lounge and Stay Human restaurant to be places for connection.
  • Working closely with our local community, sponsoring events, ceremonies and educational programs.
  • A community service reserve has been created where we contribute 3% of our profit. These funds are dedicated to supporting maternal and birth health, environmental protection and cultural preservation.

Human to Nature: We believe that at Soulshine we are stewards of the rice fields surrounding our structures. Over 700 years old, keeping these rice fields safe transcends beyond cultural preservation but also significant positive environmental impact:

  • Carbon Sequestration: In addition to producing oxygen, rice fields also play a role in carbon sequestration. The organic matter in the soil can capture and store carbon, which contributes to reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
  • Biodiversity: Healthy rice paddies can support a variety of aquatic plants and animals, which further contributes to the ecosystem’s overall productivity and resilience, enhancing their ability to support oxygen production.
  • Photosynthesis: Rice plants, like all green plants, absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and take in sunlight through their leaves. During photosynthesis, they convert CO2 and water into glucose and oxygen (O2). The oxygen is then released back into the atmosphere.

Human to Spirit: Honoring the religion and traditions of Bali are prioritized here at Soulshine. Walking around the property you will find temples in various location honoring the river, or the rice. You will also see offerings known as canang sari, an integral part of daily life and spiritual practice. These offerings are made to honor the gods, spirits, and ancestors and are often placed in small woven baskets made from palm leaves. Ensuring that we are actively participating is a way for us to express gratitude, maintain harmony, and seek blessings in our daily lives.

In essence, Tri Hita Karana teaches us the profound wisdom of living in harmony with ourselves, others, and the world around us. By embracing the principles of balance, respect, and interconnectedness, we can cultivate a sense of peace, joy, and fulfillment in our lives. Let us take inspiration from the Balinese philosophy and strive to create a more harmonious and sustainable world for all beings to thrive.

When you come stay with us, please be sure to ask us about Tri Hita Karana and how your stay will be influenced. You will go home feeling inspired.
